Phonics

We are exceptionally proud of our high phonics scores with around 93% of children passing the phonics screening check each year against a national average of 81%. This is thanks to our high-quality teaching which is based upon the Read, Write, Inc (RWI) scheme.

As soon as the children begin in FS1, they are exposed to a variety of activities which support their early listening skills. Once the children are secure with this stage they then move on to daily phonics sessions to learn the first 30 set 1 sounds. When the children move into FS2 the children continue to learn set, 1, 2 and 3 sounds and start to write, read and spell simple words.

The phonics sessions consist of a carousel of activities which encourage the children to utilise all of these skills. We strongly value the impact parents can have on their childrens’ learning and because of this we offer adult RWI training at the start of the academic year. Drop-in sessions have been provided where teachers model a phonics session and the key strategies used to support early reading and writing. Key words are sent home with the children to support their sight reading.
